In Ahwal, I use my family's photo archives as a departure point for exploring the uncertain tension between past and present, and in particular between our spiritual longings and our physical limitations.
I'm interested in rhythmic spiritual states and in the mystic idea that life unfolds in defined and continuous patterns. On the path to illumination, Sufi mystics move between these ever-changing spiritual states (or ahwal,) experiencing a range of sensations such as constraint and expansion, fear and hope, longing and intimacy. My sources include self portraiture and archival photography.
